Hottest Sunglasses For Spring 2017

It’s nearly mid-April, temps are firmly in the 60s (seriously flirting with the 70s), and we are already dreaming of brighter days and warm-weather fashion. And as it goes every year, that almighty spring-and-summer staple you simply can’t leave the house without is, of course, your signature sunglasses. The recent runway shows featured color, stripes, romantic elements, and military-inspired khaki, and – lucky for us – there’s pretty much a pair of sunglasses to match every trend. As for which pair (or two!) to pick, here’s a handy guide to this season’s sunnies.

Color: Reds, yellows, and blues dominate while white continues to be a standout, but color isn’t just for frames anymore and tinted lenses are sharing the spotlight. So, if you’ve always wanted to be one of those people who sees the world through rose-colored glasses, now’s your chance.

Shape: Round is the hottest shape for both men's and women’s sunglasses this season, but there are plenty of others to try too. Round cat-eye sunglasses combine two shapes and give a classic choice a unique spin. Or try making a statement with geometric sunglasses that range from square to octagon. For something really out-there, check out this season’s butterfly-shaped sunglasses. Yep, they exist.

Size: The phrase bigger is better is certainly true of sunglasses this season. Oversized sunnies, one of the most popular styles for the past several seasons, have returned and clearly aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. You can play with shape and color to keep your look current or go back in time to shield shades. That’s right, your favorite style from the early 2000s is back and better than ever.

Metals: Go bold with double-wire rims or timeless with our all-time fave in this category: the classic hybrid browline style. First popularized in the 1950s, these acetate-on-the-top, wire-on-the-bottom sunglasses will elevate any look (we’re talking to you, Miss T-shirt-and-jeans) to something special.

Embellishment: Fashion-wise, florals and ruffles on the runway are keeping up the romantic look that last season’s lace trend started, and sunglasses have hopped on the girly train too. So shed your utilitarian pair of sunglasses in favor of a statement piece/work of art with the addition of floral, crystal, and even enameled fruit (!) accents. These pieces may not exactly be practical (especially if you’re one of those people who perches your sunglasses on the top of your head) but they sure are pretty!

And remember:

  • Aim for sunglasses rated UV400 and above to block at least 95% of the sun’s harmful UV radiation.
  • Polarized sunglasses reduce glare but don’t block UV radiation.
  • People with light-colored eyes are at a higher risk for sun damage.
  • Wear ‘em on cloudy days too, as they can help keep eyes from drying out by protecting them from the wind.
